1-on-1 Online Offerings
Accent Reduction
Accent Reduction sessions are 30 minutes in length. Prior to the first lesson, students submit a self-recording for speech analysis. In addition to lessons together, students are provided with access to a variety of resources that encourage self-study and pronunciation practice.
Proofreading/Editing
Native and non-native English speakers share writing to be reviewed as Google documents. Using Google docs, comments, questions, and suggested edits are clearly visible and easily accepted or rejected. Feedback is provided on the overall content and organization of your writing as well as spelling, grammar, word choice, and syntax. I am happy to review multiple drafts and discuss assignments on the phone or the online platform.
Conversation
For beginners, the primary focus of conversation class is building confidence through vocabulary expansion and the practice of question-and-answer structures using the basic verb tenses. Role-plays are employed to practice conversation in a variety of situational contexts. Intermediate and advanced students tackle complex verb tenses, grammatical structures, and vocabulary - including idiomatic language. Students are invited to shape the direction of conversation and are encouraged to ask questions and explore vocabulary particular to their interests.
Writing/Grammar
Writing and grammar skills are taught via direct and indirect methods. Understanding the desire to find an elusive formula for accurate English production, I help students develop an intuitive sense of the language. Letting go of native language interference can be quite challenging. It may be necessary to approach a grammar topic from multiple angles before a dramatic "A-ha!" moment or a gradual acceptance of a new structure occurs. I have the patience and experience to get you there.
Listening/Speaking
The structure and content of listening and speaking sessions are shaped by the wants, needs, and ability level of each student. Classes can be built around vocabulary development, discussion of articles or videos, and pronunciation instruction and practice. Written homework assignments and grammar instruction are a component of speaking classes because improved writing leads to improved speech.
Interview Preparation
Interview preparation sessions are typically one hour in length with the first 30 minutes devoted to a mock interview and the remaining 30 minutes spent reviewing what was said and what improvements can be made. In advance of such sessions, students are asked to provide a resume and a copy of the job posting to which he or she has applied.
